For The Coupon Exchange Partners

Please stay tuned to my links as I am always adding more each day!  A friend of mine found the Weekly Coupon Insert Service so I thought I would share it with you all. It is a great way to build up your coupons and begin to start your stockpile pantry with multiple coupons of products you are using. I love to hear about your fantastic shopping trips so leave me a post with all the details!
Enjoy and happy savings to you all!

Happy June!

I hope you all had an amazing weekend full of celebrations for our freedoms, finished you honey-do projects, or just spent time with friends grilling and eating amazing food! We did a combination of these and were thankful to hear from our two oldest kids. It is so nice to be a valid part of their lives and be a witness to watching their journeys unfold. It was so scary to me to watch them be all grown up and leave the nest. I felt like I'd hold my breath until they came home again for a visit. Watching them both go down different paths in life has been both a joy and a privilege and being able to share in their frustrations, joy & triumphs has also been such an honor. I LOVE MY KIDDOS!
So what are you feeling particularly blessed about today? Is the sun finally out where you are and you feel full of hope that you can dash outside and start your gardening? I know I am! Finally after days of rain, sleet, and snow I am going to rush outside and plant my wildflower garden along with my 100+ sunflowers and hopefully get started on the veggie and herb gardens before the next storm comes in! What are you planting this year? Have you tried something new that you are excited about? For me, I am hoping that our rather short grow season (110 days typically) will be enough to replant my lawns and get some amazing fruit trees and veggies so I will can them all this late summer. Always an optimist, I aim for the sky and hope that it will work out this year as it hasn't always before!
As an avid couponer, I am waiting "patiently" for the newest batches of coupons to come out for June, and am going through all my May coupons to check my pantry and make sure I have used what I need before I send off the extras to my coupon buddy and the overseas military families we have adopted through our coupon exchange. I am getting ready to start teaching coupon basics to new couponers and am looking forward to watching even more people become amazing consumers.
The sun is out in full force today and my zoo is hyper because of being cooped up in the house all weekend due to the poopy weather so I am going to sign off here for now and go out and refill the bird feeders and spend some time with the hubby working on our projects! Wishing you all an amazing day full of sunshine and happiness. Take care!

Military Mailing List For Expired Coupons

Happy Memorial Day to all!
A simple easy way to show a military family you care is to send coupons! Commissaries are very costly for them so the least we can do is send coupons to cut their costs, plus that means you can send your expireds! (Some commissaries will allow them to use them up to 9 months after expiration.)
Here is a quick list of some of the military women who have joined the exchange overseas. I know we have more joining so please stay "tuned". I suggest always sending each member a stack of them so they all get some each week. If you have any suggestions then please let me know!
I am so excited that my "ah ha" moment has made it so far around the world and am excited to see how much good this group can do! So go, cut your coupons, save and share!

Memorial Weeked Misc

Have you hugged your veteran yet? Don't forget the real spirit of the "holiday" and say thanks to our military AND their families!
Are you doing anything fun this holiday; camping, fishing, getting those household projects checked off of the honey-do list, or just grilling with good friends? We have been busy building new shelves for our pantry. We were out of the house early this AM to take advantage of some really good deals and John came along for the first time to see just how true couponing is done. Albertsons was having double coupons again today so we hit them up first thing and then ran to Walgreens to pick up all the FREE products that were out in the new ad today and gain those register rewards. Proud to say that I saved 78% on my shopping today with coupons! Was glad to have my husband come along to help sort out all of the coupons, keep track of the calculations for each trip and see what it is I have been doing while he is away in the oilfield at work for three weeks at a time! (Boy was he surprised to come home and see the growth in our pantry!)
So after putting away all our stock and sorting through the receipts, it was time to get into contest mode and film my cheesecake entry for the Real Women of Philadelphia dessert contest. (Please Paula, pick my recipe!) John and his coworkers really enjoy the cheesecake creations I come up with, so I am happy to enter a contest to try to win $25,000.00!  I must say I have never had stage fright so badly and in my own home in front of John too! (Ugh!) Several takes later I have a video presentation to submit, mini cheesecakes for the freezer and I hope the winning recipe! :)
While the cheesecakes were baking and cooling John and I were at a filming standstill so he decided to take me for a spin in our dining room to one of our wedding songs. Was nice to inject a little spontaneous fun to the day. About this time, can I tell you that I was one happy chic! What a great day; it may be raining outside but hanging with the zoo and baking makes me one happy girl. Add in having John home to cook for and dance with; hey, that is just an added bonus!
So I'm going to sign off here for today and grill some of John's "famous" steaks and have a nice relaxing evening at home. I hope that wherever you are, you are dry, safe and enjoying a good recipe with friends and family. May God bless our troops and their families for their sacrifices for the freedoms I have enjoyed today. GN!

Product Reviews

  • Grill Tongs

Product TestedPincersTensionSturdinessPrice*
Highly Recommended
Oxo Good Grips 16-inch Locking TongsComfortable, lightweight, and sturdy, these passed every test with top marks. The pincers picked up multiple spears of asparagus in one swoop, cupped corn firmly, and did not damage tender rib meat. One tester said, "I could perform heart surgery with these." ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ $14.99
Recommended
Weber Style TongsAlmost identical to our top tongs, these felt comfortable in our hands. Shorter than advertised—a usable length of 16 inches instead of 19, with a 3-inch lock—they gripped ribs, hot coals, and multiple asparagus spears. But the pincers angled inward sharply, cutting into rib meat. ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ $10.99
Recommended with Reservations
Kingsford Texas Turner TongsStrong, solid arms made maneuvering heavy items easy; however, several testers objected to their stiff tension and oversize handles. They also locked erratically as we used them, and the sharp lock was uncomfortable to push. ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ $12
Not Recommended
Outset Rosewood Extra-Long LockWe liked this pair’s smooth, ridged wood grip as well as its dexterity at picking up ears of corn. But they were too heavy and long to work -comfortably or control smaller items like asparagus, and too big for cooks with smaller hands. ★ ★ ★ ★ $14.95
Not Recommended
Lodge Camp Dutch Oven TongsThe lightest and shortest in our lineup, these tongs had a locking bar that constantly slid down. Pincer tips did not align, so picking up asparagus was a challenge, although they gripped ribs and hot coals marginally well. We also knocked off points for stiff and choppy motion. ★ ★ ★ ★ $10.95
Not Recommended
Steven Raichlen 19.5-inch Locking TongsExtra-large pincers were great for holding large slabs of ribs but not so great at picking up thin asparagus. At nearly 1 pound, they were uncomfortably heavy, with unnecessarily large grips and too-tight tension. One tester noted that they felt like exercise equipment. ★ ★ ★ ★ $17.99
Not Recommended
Cuisinart Professional Grill TongsThese unusual tongs had pronounced teeth that cut into meat and made getting under ribs and around corn and chicken very difficult. They managed a decent, if shaky, grip on asparagus and coals but felt bulky and awkward. As far as we could tell, the scooper arm was useless. ★ ★ $19.99
Not Recommended
OXO Good Grips BBQ TongsCompletely flat pincers slid easily under ribs but failed to grip corn or asparagus without -slipping. Opening just over 2 inches, they had to be stretched to grab a chicken. The usable length was just 13 inches. ★ ★ $14.99

Coupon Policies for Military Families

Expired Coupons Help Military Families

Part 1: Turn Your Expired Coupons Into Gold

By , About.com Guide

For military families who relocate overseas, the financial transition can be difficult. Enlisted soldiers and their families may find stretching their dollars a real challenge, even more so then those who are based in this country.

One way that we can help is by saving expired or unused coupons and sending them to select co-op operations around the country. There are several military family support centers overseas who offer coupon exchanges. The military commissaries overseas accept manufacturer's cents-off coupons for up to six months past their printed expiration dates. What a treasure it is to know that our expired coupons can mean a real difference to the families who have dedicated and sacrificed a part of their lives for the sake of our country.

There are many ways that one individual can make a large difference to so many. If you are interested in participating in the collection of expired coupons to help these families, here is a small list of ideas that can help get you started.
  • Post announcements in your company cafeteria or employee lounge and place a box for the coupons to be kept.
  • Involve the members of any organization or clubs you may belong to such as your Senior Citizens Center, Garden Center, Book Club, Women's or Men Groups, etc., and get them involved in your efforts.
  • If you are a teacher, use this as a project for your classes challenging your students to collect as many as possible. Offer a plaque of achievement to the class that collects the most.
  • Solicit your fellow Church or Synagogue members to join in your cause!
What Do We Have to Do? You can only imagine the huge tasks that these organizations have as they go about sorting and bundling the coupons that are sent in. Since it is everyone's goal to be of help and not a hindrance, there are guidelines that are suggested for groups or individuals that are participating in this program. It looks pretty much like what we do anyway, but on a bigger scale.

- Tips -
  • Cut and trim the sides of the coupons. This is not only helpful to the receiving centers, but you do not want to pay postage on dead weight.
  • Separate the coupons into two major categories - Food (for humans) and Non-Food (pet food would be non-food). Place them in large sealed freezer bags and label.
  • Attach a dollar total of the coupons onto the bag.
  • Prior to sending your coupons, you may want to touch base with whom you are sending them to, to make certain that they do not have any other preferences for you to follow.
Adpot Your Own Military Base

You may elect to start your own co-op. Often individuals who are interested in doing this will "adopt" a military base for their co-ops contributions. The process just takes good organizational skills and a team willing to help.

Gardening

So it is still way too cold here to actually start planting but with a very short grow season (110 days on average) so I have started my garden indoors hoping to move them out to a raised garden bed. No such luck! Mother Nature seems content in continuing the rain, cold and extreme winds. I know the first day of summer is coming soon but "wow", we are still using our fireplace and heaters at night and maybe enjoy 1 sunny day a week.
I am so ready to get out to the garden! I have big plans this year to plant over 150 sunflowers, a wild garden, herb garden, veggie garden and a new rose garden. I've had friends digging up all my tulip bulbs for weeks now, trying to recycle them and have managed to plant 2 flower beds and some hanging baskets (2 of which Bailey, our white lab "monster" has managed to rip down). I'm still waiting on the grass seed (I ordered "grow anywhere" seed since Wyo really doesn't have anything but dirt) and am looking for mini lemon tree/lime tree combo. I've seen them before and would love to try one out! I use citrus in a lot of my cooking and baking. There is nothing better than fresh herbs from your garden, citrus from your own trees, and fresh berries to cap off your meal!
I grew up with a large garden that my mom would plant each year. It was amazing to me the robust flavors you got from your garden vs frozen/canned products. When I was a young mother and broke as all get out, I grew a garden, steamed the veggies and pureed them for my son Brian's baby food. I would do it again that way in a heart beat! He ate really good produce that I knew was not sprayed or infested and I controlled the salt/sugar in his diet. It's something I do recommend to all mommies who have the space and can take care of the garden. The effort is worth the payoff! When our youngest, (Connor) was little I started gardening again to teach him about the cycle of life, how our meals come from the earth and that eating fresh fruits and veggies was so good for him. He would spend hours out in the garden with me, digging the dirt, watching the worms and lady bugs and helping me water. (It was a "pure" moment in time with him and I've always cherished those memories!)
What are your plans for your gardens this year? Do you have your seeds started indoors hoping Mother Nature is going to cooperate one of these days, like me? I'd love to hear about your plans/tips/ideas! I enjoy watching the TV show Yard Crashers for good practical ideas on how to fix up a yard. So until then... happy gardening to you all!

Tips, Tricks, & Ideas

May 26, 2011 - 01:46 AM
Many people have started couponing recently due to an increased awareness of the money it can save. While there is talk about having a stockpile and people talk about how it saves them money, many never talk about the things you should think about first.
Here are some things to think about before you start stockpiling:
Evaluate- Before you even start a stockpile you need to evaluate what your family uses. If your family uses two bottles of shampoo a month and you know that sales run in about three month cycles then there is no need to get more than six bottles. If you do get more than the six bottles, I would recommend donating them.
Space- Do you have space for your stockpile? Where would you store items you are planning on stockpiling? I store extra shampoo and other bathroom related items in the bathroom cabinets. Extra food goes in the cabinets or on a shelf in the garage. Keep in mind the amount of space you have before you go and buy large amounts of things for your stockpile.
Cost- Are you getting these items very inexpensively or free? If you are paying for the items, are you sure that this is a rock bottom price? It is a horrible feeling to buy a bunch of something then find out it is even cheaper next week.
NOTE: While it is a good idea to have a stockpile it is NEVER a good idea to clear the shelves of any item. Be sure not to take more than you can actually use. Also, if it is an excellent deal you can always go back another day and get more. Donating is NOT an excuse to clear the shelves either.
What are some other things you think people should evaluate before they start a stockpile?

Sample Coupon Binder

Found this good article on coupon binders and thought I would share. Mine is very similar to this one but I splurged and bought a binder that actually zips up and I really like it! The pencil holder is the same one I have and it is nice because it has pockets on the inside to keep your scissors separate and then on the back of the holder it has 5+ smaller pockets for you to hold the coupons you are using when checking out! (Staples $2.15) I love mine and really enjoy the zip up binder for the security and the extra storage on the inside. I don't have the tabs on each section like this one; I have one main "directory" and then the numbers on the directory page are what shows on the side (it's nice this way because you don't worry about losing your "tabs" out of the dividers). Wishing you all a happy day of savings!
Actual Pictures
My coupon binder is a simple, white, 3-inch 3-ring binder that I purchased at Wal-Mart for about $3. I have plans of making a Coupon Clutch (I even have all the material and notions for it), but haven't gotten around to it yet (I'll post about it once it's done).
I love using the binder method because it takes less time to search for coupons--I just flip to the category then leaf through the pages. I also love it because I can carry all of my coupons with me when I go shopping. So when I see a good deal and I have a coupon for it, it's always right there with me. I've recently been in the habit of bringing my binder with me everywhere I go, even if I don't intend to do any shopping. Many times have my husband and I been driving home from church or something and decided to stop somewhere to pick something up that we need. It's in these moments I often find a really good sale, and I know I have a corresponding coupon, but, alas, it's not with me.

Before I tell you the details of what I keep in my binder, let me show you the pocket pages I use. I use a few 3-pocket ones and the remaining are 8-pocket. I prefer the 8-pocket pages as opposed to the 9-pocket ones because the top is wider, making it easier to put coupons in and pull them out.

Now to the parts of my binder. Just so you know, all the ideas I use in my coupon binder are not completely my own. I have gleaned ideas from various other couponers online and in person. I combined these ideas, added a few of my own, and created a system that works for me. How I arrange and use my binder works for me, but I'm sure yours will probably be different based on your needs and what is convenient for you. With that said, here are the elements of my coupon binder and their descriptions (by the way, if you're more visual I have a video towards the bottom of this post):

  • Zipper Pouch. I have a purple zipper pouch in the very front of my binder. This pouch holds my calculator (I am terrible at math), a pen, pencil, mini pair of scissors, and some scratch paper. I also stick my receipts in another of its pockets to sort through and file when I get home.
  • Rebates. The next item I keep in my binder is a 3-pocket page for rebates. I like to keep this towards the fronts so I see it often and don't forget to fill them out and turn them in before they expire. I prefer to keep them in my binder as opposed to leaving them at home because when I am purchasing an item for which I have a rebate, sometimes the rebate is very specific as to which item it covers, so it helps to have it with me for reference.

  • 5 Pocket Dividers. Next are 5 plastic pocket dividers. I have one per store I shop at (Walgreens, King Soopers, Safeway, and Wal-Mart) plus one labeled Other Stores. In the front pocket of each divider I keep the corresponding store's newspaper ad and perhaps other items like coupon booklets. In the second pocket on the divider I keep the corresponding store's coupon policy that I printed from their website. I like to keep the policies with me just in case I have trouble redeeming a coupon.

  • 3-Pocket Pages. Behind each of the 5 pocket dividers, I keep one 3-pocket page. In the bottom pocket I keep items like rain checks and cash Register Rewards. When I am at home planning my shopping trip, I will insert coupons I think I might use in the middle pocket. While at the store I move coupons from the middle pocket to the top pocket or from the main section of the binder to the top pocket as I put their corresponding items in the cart; this way, I simply pull all the top-pocket coupons out and hand them to the cashier.

  • 32 Tab Dividers. Next is the main part of the binder. I have four sets of 8 tab dividers for a total of 32 tab dividers. Although paper dividers are cheaper, I prefer to use plastic ones because they are more durable and attractive. Here are the categories that dawn each of these tabs:

      1. Condiments & Salad Dressing
      2. Candy & Snacks
      3. Drinks
      4. Breakfast
      5. Sides, Pasta, & Rice
      6. Canned & Jarred
      7. Baking & Cooking
      8. Baby Food
      9. Baby Non-Food
      10. Pets
      11. Frozen
      12. Dairy & Eggs
      13. Refrigerated
      14. Meat
      15. Breads
      16. Other Food
      17. Aluminum & Plastic
      18. Paper Products
      19. Cleaning Supplies
      20. Lotion & Beauty
      21. Personal Care
      22. Soap & Body Wash
      23. Shampoo & Hair Care
      24. Oral Care
      25. Feminine Care
      26. Medicine
      27. Vitamins
      28. First Aid
      29. Other Non-Food
      30. Restaurants
      31. Auto
      32. Miscellaneous

  • 8-pocket Pages. Between each category are the 8 pocket pages which hold the coupons. Sometimes the coupons need to be folded to fit. When this happens I try to make it so the item description and/or picture is front-facing so I can easily see what item the coupon is for. If I have multiples of a coupon for one item, I will insert them in the same pocket with the ones that are about to expire first toward the front.
Now I want to tell you a little about a notebook I keep in my binder in the zipper pouch. When I am out shopping and I find a rock-bottom price for something, I write it in this notebook. This way, when I get ready to buy something, I can look at it on my rock-bottom list to see whether or not it is a deal worth buying.

How about you? How do you organize your coupon binder? What extras do you put in it?

Ok, so maybe not GN yet!

I am so excited and so happy that so many people across the country are saving more monies for their families by joining this coupon exchange! I am so thrilled that my "ah ha" moment can benefit anyone and even happier to reconnect with long lost friends and meet so many new interesting people along the journey! I think we all can do BIG things in our daily lives but when you join a group together: LOOK OUT! I'm excited to see just how much giving this group can do and how many lives we can touch with couponing. To steal a phrase from Extreme Couponing: "Watch the magic"!
I can't wait to see where our stockpiles are a month from now and how many new people have joined the group. I am excited to see just how much good we all can do with coupons. Tonight was a great moment and I can't stop smiling about it. West Coast Coupon Clipping Service and I discussed sending all her boxes of expired coupons to the military overseas. Once she heard about the coupon exchange and what we were doing she was so excited to jump in with ideas! I look forward to watching her growth and seeing the development on the forum on her website. If you haven't checked it out yet, what are you waiting for? I have a link at the bottom of my blog that will take you THERE!
Thanks for stopping by my blog and I look forward to hearing from you all! Keep posted for new tips, tricks, and ideas each day and I will also be sharing many recipes for you to add to your recipe boxes. GN all!

Recipe Ideas

So how many of you out there struggle with "what's for dinner"? I know I have many "go to" dishes, but when couponing you need to balance it with menu planning. If someone has a great suggestion; lay it on me! I have always cooked to what sounded good or what my husband was craving and never really thought much about getting the best bang for my buck out of each meal. I now make a little extra each meal I make and break some off immediately for his lunches & dinners since he works out in the oilfields and on a 3 week hitch would be eating out every meal! I am always on the look out for clever sandwich ideas that will keep while he's on his "trip". I am constantly scouring magazines, cookbooks, and online sites to find new ideas.  If you have a favorite site you like to use... lay it on me! I am off to cut some coupons and spend some time with the animals, (affectionately named the "zoo")! GN!

West Coast Coupon Clipping Service

Wow! Had the most amazing chat with Tammy tonight and learned a few things for all of us! First off, she has some big news so stay tuned to her site for the details! Also, if we put the other 4 digits on the back of our zip codes, the post office can mail out much faster! And some good news for our overseas military families: Tammy has boxes of expired coupons and would love to donate them! Wow, can you say HUGE savings for all??! So glad to meet new people around the country and to exchange ideas!
